The 2024 Care Wellness Kooyong Classic field is headlined by the brilliant Italian Jannik Sinner, the world No.4 who defeated 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic twice in November.
Sinner, who led Italy to its first Davis Cup in 47 years when defeating Australia in the final, elected to play at the 2024 Kooyong Classic because its reputation and staging provides the perfect preparation for Grand Slam tennis.
“The inclusion of Murray, Ruud and Raonic illustrates the importance of the Care Wellness Kooyong Classic as a lead-in for the Australian Open,” tournament director Peter Johnston said.
Sinner is joined by Holger Rune, Frances Tiafoe, Stan Wawrinka, Karen Khachanov, Dominic Thiem, Zhang Zhizhen and Marin Cilic, in a field that has amassed 154 ATP titles, seven Grand Slam victories and two Olympic gold medals.
“Sir Andy, Milos, Casper and Marc are all great additions to a field that is shaping as one of the best we have ever seen at the club,” Johnston said.
“We have so many crowd favourites competing and I’m sure we are going to see some brilliant tennis.
“Marc Polmans adds the hometown touch to the event, but he will not be underestimated. It was great to see him playing so well in Asia this year on his comeback from some significant injuries.”
With the men’s field set, the Care Wellness Kooyong Classic is again looking to add a smaller women’s field to the event in January after success in recent years.
Grand Slam-winning champions are among those to express interest in appearing at Kooyong, but the WTA Tour has strict rules related to non-tour sanctioned tournaments.
Johnston said the event is committed to provide opportunities for female players to participate in the event once again.
“We know how much our fans have loved seeing women competing in recent editions of the Care Wellness Kooyong Classic. Some of the greatest female players in history have been champions when the Australian Open was played at Kooyong and we want to continue to link to that heritage.
“We just need to wait on some scheduling decisions by players to determine what we are permitted to do whist being respectful to the WTA rules. We should able to make an announcement leading into Christmas.”
